Design & Prototyping · Fall 2026 · Chiba Tech SDS

Ira Winder

I design coordination systems: the platforms, models, and interfaces through which people, projects, and ideas connect across disciplines and institutions. My work spans software engineering, data architecture, urban systems, and organizational design, with a through-line of making complex systems legible and actionable.

I'm an Associate Professor at the Chiba Tech Graduate School of Design & Science and a Principal Investigator at the Henkaku Center. Before that I taught Computational Urban Science at MIT and, at the MIT Media Lab, built the tangible interactive matrix that became a platform for the CityScope project. This semester I'm teaching Design & Prototyping, and doing the assignments alongside the students.

Three challenges

Three difficult challenges that, if addressed, would make people's lives radically better. These describe what changes when each is solved, not how to solve it.

1Challenge title

Today

Who is affected, and what their lives are like with the challenge unsolved.

Once it's addressed

What changes for them, day to day.

Beyond the individual

What changes for communities, institutions, and society.

Why it's worth years of effort

Why this matters enough to dedicate years to it.

Unforeseen consequences

What could go wrong or shift unexpectedly once it's solved.
